New Kensington ousted by Penn State Beaver

Although competitive in each set, host Penn State New Kensington was defeated by Penn State Beaver 3-0 on Wednesday. Visiting Beaver claimed the match 26-24, 25-20, and 25-20.

With the setback, New Kensington falls to 0-3 in Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) play, and 1-5 overall. Beaver captured its first win of the campaign, improving to 1-1 in the PSUAC and 1-6 overall.

The opening set required extra points, but Beaver ultimately prevailed, as the visitors held a significant advantage in kills, 13-6. The middle set was the best attack performance of the night for New Kensington, but the hosts still came up short. Beaver closed out the victory in the third, posting a game-high 14 kills, while committing just four attack errors.

New Kensington was led by freshman Elliott Ferrent (Punxsutawney, Pa/Punxsutawney), who posted a match-high 10 kills. Fellow freshman Kylie DiLeo (Springdale, Pa/Springdale) contributed five kills and seven digs, which tied junior Bethany Baney (Apollo, Pa/Kiski Area) for the team lead. Freshman Kayla Unger (Carlisle, Pa/Carlisle) guided the offense with 19 assists. Additionally, freshman Gabby Wolfkill (Mifflin, Pa/Mifflin) provided a pair of service aces, and Ally Albert (Cabot, Pa/Knoch) chipped in with five digs.

Beaver received nine kills and five blocks, both team highs, from Maria Slater, while Breann King added eight kills, 13 assists, and 11 digs. Heaven Bowman produced a game-high 18 digs, while Chelsey Masjuan notched three aces.

Penn State New Kensington returns to the court on Saturday, Sept. 25 at noon for a road match against Penn State Fayette.
