Softball Splits with Penn State Beaver

MONACA, Pa. - Penn State Schuylkill Softball split with PSUAC opponent Penn State Beaver in Friday's doubleheader matchup, defeating Beaver 9-5 in the first matchup, and falling 6-3 in the second meeting.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 9, Penn State Beaver 5

A double by Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy) followed by a single by Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley) put Schuylkill in position to score at the top of the 1st inning. An error by Beaver led to Schuylkill's first run of the contest. A single by Alyssa Youst (Schuylkill Haven, PA / Blue Mountain) on the next play led to another Schuylkill score, ending the first frame up 2-0.

A ground ball at the bottom of the second led to Beaver's first run of the contest. Schuylkill responded at the top of the third as hits by Youst and Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg) ultimately led to two runs. Beaver responded at the bottom of the frame as two hits gave them two scores to bring their deficit to 4-3.

Schuylkill began the top of the 4th inning on a single by Caitlyn Goggin (Alexandria, VA / Hayfield Secondary School). Goggin then went on steal second base plays later. A walk by McGroarty and a double by Carl led to a Goggin run. Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain) then homered in 3 runs for Schuylkill on the next play to extended Schuylkill's lead to 8-3. A Schuylkill error at the bottom of the 4th inning led to a Beaver score and brought their deficit to 8-4.

A double and single at the top of the 5th inning by Meghan Stokes (Winchester, VA / John Hadley) and Walshaw, respectively, led to Schuylkill's final run of the first contest. Beaver scored at the bottom of the 7th inning and began to gain momentum; however the Schuylkill defense was able to close the deal and defeat Beaver 9-5.

Walshaw tallied 2 hits (1 home run) and 5 RBIs for Schuylkill. Carl led Schuylkill with 3 hits. Youst and Stokes each finished with 2 hits in the victory. Walshaw went the distance on the mound, winning her matchup.

Game Two: Penn State Beaver 6, Penn State Schuylkill 3

3 hits led to 2 scores for Beaver at the bottom of the 1st inning. Schuylkill responded at the top of the 2nd inning as singles by Kristina McConnell (Port Jefferson Station, NY / Comsewogue) and Melanie Torrales (Allentown, PA / William Allen) led to a Schuylkill run.

Beaver scored at the bottom of the 3rd inning on a single to stretch their lead to 3-1. Beaver went on to take a 5-1 lead with 2 runs at the bottom of the 5th inning. Schuylkill continued to show signs of fight as 3 hits for Schuylkill at the top of the 7th inning led to 2 runs. Beaver went on defeat Schuylkill 6-3.

Kleckner tallied 2 hits in the loss. Torrales, Walshaw, and Stokes each finished with an RBI.

Schuylkill (13-9 overall, 6-4 PSUAC) will return home on Tuesday as they host NCAA Division III opponent Penn State Altoona in a doubleheader matchup. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m. followed by a 5:00 p.m. matchup.
