Media, PA -- Lady Lions split in two games of PSUAC action.
In their first match of the day, the Lady Lions faced Penn State Schuylkill who they beat easily in the first set 25-14. In the second set the Lady Lions of Beaver slowed their pace, allowing Schuylkill into the match, but hung on to win the set 25-22. In the third set, Beaver played with more heart and intensity and took the win convicingly 25-9.
The Lady Lions played nearly flawless at the net, making only 5 errors on 100 attempts as a team while putting down 45 kills. They also scored 14 points on aces, led by sophomore, Alexis Albrecht and Amanda Mike who each had 4 in the match.
In the second game of the day Beaver faced Brandywine who won the conference 2 seasons ago and finished with a semi-final loss last season. Beaver came out ready to compete in the first set and went point for point with Brandywine for the entire match and finally surged ahead for the win 27-25 off of kills from Imani Hargrove and Brooke Tomasko. Knowing they would have a difficult task ahead for the remainder of the game they mentally refocused and went for the win in set two, but they struggled on serve recieve which hurt their offense as they fell by score of 25-16. With the match tied at 1-1, now both teams ramping up their play, Beaver started hot, serving well and jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start the third. Brandywine then rallied back to even the game at 9-9 and then surged to take an 18-14 lead. But Beaver battled back to get within 1 (17-18), but Brandywine moved the ball well as 3 different attackers scored to take a 5 point lead (22-17) and would then go on to win 25-19.
In the fourth set, with Beaver looking to take the match to five, they fell behind early, but quickly turned things around and regained an 8-7 lead. The teams exchanged the lead several times before Beaver went up 18-15 looking to be in control. But as Brandywine had done all afternoon, they came back to tie the game at 21-21 and then took control to finish the match scoring four consecutive points for the set and match win.
Despite the loss, the Lady Lions were led by Tomasko and Imani Hargrove with 14 and 9 kills respectively. Ryanne "Roxy" Kie tallied 26 assists while Jenna Petrucci scored 3 service aces.
This was one of the top 3 games the Lady Lions have played all season and they look forward to continuing their aggressive play tomorrow when they travel to Penn State York to face both York and Mont Alto slated for a 12:00 p.m. start.
