The Penn State Beaver girls start their season against one of the top teams in the nation, Maine Fort Kent. The game was the first game for Beaver on their home court as they hosted a tip-off tournament, and it looked to be a challenging start for them.
The first set started off bad for the Beaver girls as they went down early. After a few good trips to the service line Beaver found a little momentum and started working to get the lead back. However, the girls from Fort Kent were too tough for them and killed Beaver's rally quickly while ending up winning the first set by a score of 25-18.
The second set started off more evenly as both teams took points back and forth. Once againt though, Fort Kent started to pull away and while this time Beaver gained a little momentum at the end to almost take the set, Fort Kent proved to be too much as they fell in this set by a score of 25-23. In this set, Beaver showed that they could hang around with a tough opponent like Fort Kent by competing in some really long battles and killing Fort Kent's momentum during some crucial moments.
The third set started off in Fort Kent's favor once again. They came out of the gates ready to finish the game and to their surprise Beaver responded pretty well. During this set the two teams were neck and neck at one point but as Beaver tired down towards the end Fort Kent finished the job, winning the set 25-20, and the match 3-0.
Although they lost the match three sets to none, Beaver looked impressive in their season opener against one of the toughest opponents in the country. They fought hard and held their own for as long as they could. Players Morgan Cannister, with 17 total attempts and a team high 3 solo blocks, and Ryanne "Roxy" Kie, with 2 service aces, played very well and showed just hard their willing to go to win this year. The Beaver girls play their next game on August 27 at home versus Christendom at 11 am.
