Wrestling opens 2012 - 2013 Season at the W&J Invitational
Squad battles hard in their first invitational of the season
In it's second season, the Beaver Lions opened their season at the W&J Invitational. With a small squad, they traveled to Washington, PA where they faced wrestlers from IUP, Thiel, Pitt-Johnstown, Heidelberg, Baldwin-Wallace and W&J.
Competing at 133, Sean Newkirk (McDonough, PA /Henry County) finished his day at 1-2. He lost to his opponent from Thiel by a score of 11-15, battled back to win his second bout and then was defeated in his third match by a wrestler from Heidelberg by a score of 8-18.
Representing Beaver in the 165 weight class was junior Dylan Winkle (Aliquippa, PA/Hopewell). In his first match he faced a tough opponent from Baldwin-Wallace, losing by a score of 1-17. Winlke's second match-up was better as he took on his opponent from W&J, but he still fell by a score of 6-21. Dylan finished 0-2 on the day.
The newest member of the team this season, freshman Devante Phillip (Waldorf, MD/Thomas Stone), competed in his first ever match today. Despite finishing 0-2 on the day (both losses by fall), he made a strong showing and looks to improve on his skills throughout the year.
When asked about their day, Coach Winkle said that is was a rough day and he anticipated that they would make a stronger showing, but the team faced very good wrestlers. He is looking forward to learning from these matches and working hard this week at practice.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Penn College on Saturday afternoon at 12:00pm.
