Monaca, PA- The Penn State Beaver men's wrestling team competed in their first home match of not only the season, but in the history of the program. The Lions hosted Penn College, Penn State Fayette, and Penn State Mont Alto for a PSUAC conference quad.
In their first match, Beaver forfeited the first two weight classes (125 & 133) to Mont Alto, falling behind in the match 12-0. At the 157 class, sophomore Dylan Winkle (Hopewell/Aliquippa, PA) won by fall in the 2nd period to get Beaver on the board (12-6). Winkle's teammates followed his lead, taking the 165, 174, and heavy weight classes to win the match 18-12. At 165, Bobby Tempalski (Hopewell/Hookstown, PA) won by decision 12-8. At 174, senior Keagan Donnan (South Side/Hookstown, PA) won by fall in the first 30 seconds of the match. In the heavyweight class, with the match on the line, sophomore Wesley Mummert (York/Red Lion, PA) won by decision 11-7.
In the second match of the day, Beaver fell to Penn College 36-6. Beaver's lone bright spot came at the 174 class, when Donnan recorded his second pin of the day, again in the first period.
In the night cap, Beaver began by forfeiting the 133 and 141 weight classes. At 157, Tempalski lost 9-2. At 165, Winkle was defeated by fall in the 3rd. Beaver did rally, taking the 174, 197 and heavy weight classes to make the match close, but lost 21-18. Donnan once again won by fall in the first period; Fayette forfeited the 197 class as well as the heavy weight class.
Clearly the wrestler of the day was Donnan. In his first match since returning from injury, Keagan is 3-0, with three falls, and wrestling for a total time of 2 minutes and 12 seconds for the day (3 matches).
The Beaver grapplers return to action Saturday, January 14th, 2012, when they travel to Ursinus College (Collegeville, PA).
