Beaver's Battle Continues as the Defeat Christendom 74-69 in Round 1 of USCAA National Tournament
Richmond, VA - Penn State Beaver Women's Basketball team began their journey to the USCAA National Championship taking on Christendom College in the first round.
The first quarter of this game started out with both teams getting buckets. Beaver started off scoring first, but Christendom responded quickly with a bucket of their own. The score remained close for the rest of the first. Beaver closed the first up by two with the score sitting 20-18. The second quarter went much like the first. With just under a minute left, Beaver had their largest lead of the first half being up by 7 points. Christendom was able to score a bucket off a rebound with just 10 seconds remaining. Beaver ended the half scoring 16 points. Christendom also managed to get 16 points this quarter. Going into halftime, Beaver was up 36-34.
Beaver scored the first bucket at the start of the third quarter. Beaver then proceeded to go on a 7-0 run. Beaver managed to get an 8 point lead over Christendom with just a few minutes remaining. Although Christendom would manage to close the gap, Beaver still remained ahead. The third quarter ended with the score sitting 52-47 in Beaver's favor. The fourth quarter of the game was arguably the best Beaver played. They held onto their lead and even when Christendom would close the gap, Beaver didn't let up on the pressure they applied defensively. Beaver dropped 22 points in the last quarter and ended their first day of the tournament with a 74-69 win over Christendom.
Junior Alison Boykin (Canton, OH) scored her season high dropping 30 points. Boykin also finished with 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Sophomore Kiera Baker (Houston, TX) finished the game with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 1 block. Junior Caitlyn O'Hara (Norco, CA) showed up on the defensive end having 5 defensive rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Freshman's Daniela Guzman (Plainview, TX) and Anissa Mata (San Antonio, TX) both dropped 9 points in Beaver's win. Guzman also managed to get 7 steals this game. Mata finished with the most assists having 4.
Beaver will be taking on #1 Central Maine Community College in the second round of the tournament. Tip off will begin at 12pm EST so stay up to date on the action at beaverathletics.com!
