By: Chris Rotondo
The Beaver women's team came off of last night's conference win with another win in their second game of Spirit Weekend. The team took on Penn State Mont Alto, defeating them 89-56.
The game immediately started in Beaver's favor, as the team made the first 11 points of the game within the first five minutes. Freshman Diamond Thomas made several layups in the first, while senior Roxy Kie made an early 3-point jump shot, helping to build their lead. Junior Ally Rudolph and sophomore Cheyenne Lopez led the team in 3-point jump shots. Beaver easily outshot Mont Alto during the quarter. Beaver efficiently worked as a team to keep the ball moving, while Mont Alto struggled to develop their own teamwork. By the end of the first quarter, Beaver was in the lead 23-13.
In the second quarter, Beaver continued to dominate the game, while Mont Alto looked clearly out of their comfort zone. Senior Brittany Jackson made several layups during the quarter, as the entire team used their defensive skills to maintain the ball. Sophomores Rachael Cummings and Tara McFadden worked in keeping the ball away from Mont Alto's offense, while also making layups of their own. As the game came to half time, Beaver maintained a 47-34 lead.
By the second half of the game, it was clear that Beaver had more than a home field advantage on their side. While Mont Alto attempted to make up for the first half, Beaver still showed their determination. As they continued to outshoot their opponent, Beaver made it clear that their work as a group was the key to success. With a final layup from freshman Julia Sabbio, Beaver defeated Mont Alto 89-56.
The team is now 7-12 in their overall season and 6-3 in their conference matches. They will return to their home court on Tuesday as they take on Penn State Du Bois in another conference match.
