Monaca, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions played host to Carlow University for the two teams third meeting this season. So far this season Carlow is 2-0 in matchups against Beaver, winning their last meeting by a blowout score of 82-39. Beaver came into this matchup fully healthy and looking to finally take a win home against a good division 1 team in Carlow University.
The game started off well for Beaver, as Senior Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) made the teams first three shots. However, Carlow was able to quickly answer back as the two teams began going back and forth for the rest of the first quarter. With three minutes left in the first, Carlow was able to battle for a small lead of 4 points to take into the second quarter of play. The second quarter was once again another back and forth battle between the two sides. With 7 minutes left before the half, Beaver was able to tie the game up at 21, but would soon lose their momentum as Carlow capitalized on a few big shots. Going into halftime Beaver only found themselves down 34-28, while still playing very well.
The third quarter didn't work out as well for Beaver as the first two had. The team came out and scored a quick 8 points to bring the game to 40-36 with 6:45 left to play. However, Carlow really caught some momentum during the last 7 minutes of the third and went on a 9-2 run to put them up 49-38 going into the fourth quarter. Beaver didn't just roll over however, and the team came out battling in the final quarter of this one. The lady lions played hard, and with 30 second left in the half they found themselves down only 1 point. The game came down to a shot in the final seconds from Beaver that they were unable to make, giving them their third loss of the season against Carlow by a final score of 61-62.
With their loss tonight, the lady lions now hold a 15-8 overall record while staying at 11-2 in conference play. With one conference game left this season, Beaver has already clinched a top four spot in the PSUAC playoffs. With a win in their next game, they will have a chance to move up in the standings to second from their current fourth spot with the help of loses from both Penn State Hazelton and Brandywine.
Beaver was led in their game tonight by the efforts of Senior Mason Depetro (Pittsburgh, PA / Cornell) who scored a team high 20 points while going 3-5 from 3-point range. The team will return to action on Saturday, February 11, against Penn State Greater Allegheny. Game time is set for 5 pm.
