Monaca, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver women's basketball team defeat the women of Penn State Hazelton by a score of 74-64.
The Penn State Beaver women's basketball team faced off against Penn State Hazelton for their second conference game of the young season. Beaver comes into this game on a two game win streak having looked very good so far this season.
The game was a close battle throughout, as both teams played sloppy thorughout. In the first quarter it was Hazelton that took an early lead due to some misques on Beaver's part. However, halfway through the quarter the team got on track and strung together some good shots to take the lead going into the second quarter. The second quarter showed two teams that were really having troubles on both defense and offense, and both teams took turns controlling the momentum. However, thanks in part to some timely shots by Beaver, Hazelton was never able to to retake the lead and Beaver took the lead into the half 41-32.
The second half of play showed a big difference in play as both teams shot terribly overall, and neither team could keep possesion either. Through a lot of turnovers the score of the game was 49-61 going into the fourth. The fourth quarter of play showed two teams that just seemed out of gas. Beaver, who was really struggling to make good passes, was helped to their win in this one due in part to Hazelton's inability to capitalize on their possesions. While neither team looked very impressive in this one, a few standout performances by Beaver helped the team to secure their third straight win by a final score of 74-64.
Beaver now sits at 4-2 overall, with a 2-0 conference record to start out the season. Senior Cassandra Flowers (Pittsburgh, PA / Westinghouse) hit a milestone in this game as she scored her 1,000 career point. Flowers, a 2013-2014 Second team All-Conference player, scored 16 points while earning a double-double with 10 rebounds. Beaver was also helped to their victory by an outstanding performance from Junior Roxy Kie (Laguna, NM / Laguna Acoma) in which she went 3-3 from three point range, scoring 16 points and hauling in 5 rebounds. The women will play next on Saturday, December 3, at home against Penn State Schuylkill. Game time is set for 1 pm.
