Lady Lions Lose a Nail Biter
Lady Lions Fall in Overtime 77-75.
Uniontown, PA- On Thursday night, the Lady Lions took on #4 seeded Berkley (NY) in the first round of the 2014 USCAA National Tournament.
In the first half, the lead changed hands five times and the score being tied five. Beaver held two first half leads of 9, once with 7 minutes left in the half, and the other with five minutes left when Freshman Kelsey Brooks (Alderdice/Pittsburgh, PA) hit back to back layups. Beaver held the lead into the half, with the score at half being 39-30. Sophomore Cassandra Flowers (Westinghouse/Pittsburgh, PA) had a double-double in the first half alone, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
In the second half, the Lady Lions built a 14 point lead early. Berkley would not go away. Chipping away and taking their first lead of the second half with 7 minutes to go. Berkley built a 7 point lead before Beaver cut it to 66-65 with 1:59 to go. After trading baskets Berkley was ahead 69-67. Beaver had the ball with 15 seconds left and a chance to tie, and Sophomore Khalia Adams (Phelps/Washington D.C.) took advantage, driving and putting the layup in with 3 seconds remaining, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, Beaver scored the first four points, building a 73-69 advantage. After a Berkley layup, Adams had a beautiful layup to build the lead back to 4 with a minute left. Berkley answered with a 3 pointer, climbing within one. After a Berkley steal and layup, Beaver was down again with 43 seconds left. Beaver would not score again, and Berkley would win 77-75.
In the loss, Flowers finished with 20 points and 23 rebounds. Flowers 23 rebounds are a USCAA Women's DII Tournament record. Morgan Kurtz led with 23 points. With the loss, Beaver will play in the consolation game at 2 p.m. versus #8 seeded Warren Wilson.
