Monaca, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver softball team took on the girls of Butler County Community College for an afternoon doubleheader. Beaver comes into these games playing well as of late, winning 5 of their last 6 in some tough matchups. The team will look to continue their good play if they want to take home wins against a good hitting BCCC team.
The first game of the day started out rocky for Beaver, as they let up 2 runs in the top of the first inning as BCCC led of the game with a triple in the gap. Beaver was able to shut down BCCC's rally quickly though, as good defense would bail them out. In the bottom of the second they would tack on 3 runs of their own as Sophomore Dina Cable (Mannington, NJ / Salem County Vo Tech) would triple with the bases load for 3 RBIs, putting Beaver ahead 3-2. It wasn't until the fourth inning when Beaver would score again as once again it was Dina Cable that would knock in a run, knocking her RBI total to four. In the sixth inning it would be Cable again kocking in the games final run, putting Beaver ahead for a 5-2 victory.
Game two started out just like the first, as BCCC would jump ahead to an early 4-0 lead due in part to some sloppy defense by Beaver. From this point on Beaver would be fighting to regain the lead in this one, as BCCC hit very well throughout this game as they tallied 17 hits. For as well as BCCC hit, Beaver matched them throughout with 18 hits. The problem for Beaver in this game was their inability to string together hits for a big inning. Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Beaver was down 10-3 with little hope of coming back. After a leadoff groundout the team started to get one hit after another, quickly chipping away at BCCC's lead run by run. With a runner on third and 2 outs, it was Senior Jenna Petrucci (New Castle, PA / Shenango) who tied the game up with a shot up the middle. After two quick singles to load up the bases, Freshman Keasha Barz (Wintersville, OH / Stuebenville) came through in the clutch with a walkoff, 2-out single to beat BCCC 11-10.
After their two wins today, Beaver now sits at 11-10 on the season. Beaver has played very well as of late, as they have now won 7 of their last 8 games. The team showed their resilience today as they overcame a 7 run deficit in the seventh inning to come out with their second win of the day. The team was led in their efforts today by Sophomore Dina Cable, who went 5-8 with 7 RBIs and a walk in both games. Beaver will take the field next on Thursday, April 13, at home against Penn State New Kensington. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and there will be a free hat giveaway to all fans in attendence.
