In their second game of the day, the Penn State Beaver softball team took the field against the women of Hagerstown Community College. Just a while earlier in the day, Beaver had lost a close game to Grove City College and look to improve as they head into this matchup.
This game started off well for Hagerstown, as they were able to jump to an early one run after scoring off of a walk and an error by Beaver. Their inning was quickly shut down after that and both side's bats went quiet until the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth, Hagerstown was able to cash in another run after getting a good leadoff double, expanding their lead to 2-0. However, Beaver was finally able to answer back in the bottom half of the inning as they mounted a four run rally, topped of by a triple from Freshman Lacey Weible, that would give them the lead going into the fifth inning. Hagerstown didn't look discouraged after losing their lead though, as they tied the game up with a two run double in the top of the fifth inning. While Beaver's bats remained quiet in the bottom half of the fifth inning, Hagerstown came out in the sixth inning and edged out what turned into the game winning run thanks to a leadoff single and some tremendous baserunning. Beaver had lost their lead and were unable to rgain it, as they fell to Hagerstown by a score of 5-4.
After losing this game, Beaver now sits at 0-4 on the season so far as they continue to improve with each game during their opening week. After getting blown out in their first three games, they have fought hard in the last two only losing by a margin of three runs. The girls were led in this game by the efforts of Freshmen Lacey Weible, who went 1-4 with a triple and two RBIs. The team will play again on Thursday, March 9, against Daneville Community College in Myrtle Beach.
