Lady Lions sweep crucial PSUAC double header

Mont Alto, PA: The Lady Lions took their 6-0 (13-7) PSUAC record on the road to visit first place 7-1 (10-1) Penn State Mont Alto on Sunday.
In game one, Beaver broke out the lumber early. Very early. In the top of the first, Freshman Lauren Pier (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) lined a 2-1 pitch to left center field to lead off the game. Senior pitcher Kayla Chambers (South Side/Hookstown,PA) followed, reaching on a hit batsman. Sophomore Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/Cranberry Twp, PA) then launched a 2-2 pitch out of the park (her fourth in five at bats) to give Beaver an early lead. Sophomore Kori Freyermuth (Perry/Pittsburgh,PA) would not be out done, launching a 1-2 pitch to deep center field to give Beaver an early 4-0 lead after one half inning of play. This was the second time in two games the pair went back to back. In the bottom of the first, Mont Alto scored 2 unearned runs to cut the lead in half (4-2). In the top of the second, Sophomore Danielle Ringel led off with a single. Ringle would score from first on Chambers one out double. This was then followed by Watkins second homer of the game, to give Beaver a 7-2 lead. Chambers held Mont Alto scoreless the rest of the way. Beaver added one run in the third, and then three in the sixth, an inning in which Watkins would hit her third homer of the game. Chambers threw six innings, giving up no earned runs, giving up seven hits, two walks, while striking out one. Watkins led offensively, going three for four, with three homers, and seven RBI's.
Game two was a much closer game. Mont Alto struck first, scoring one in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Beaver responded in the second. Junior Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood/Ellwood City, PA) led off the inning drawing a walk. Junior Jamie Karpinski (Quigley/Beaver, PA) sacrificed to move Scialdone to second. Sophomore Jocelyn Wensel then had a huge 2 out RBI single to tie the game. The game remained tied until the fifth, With one out and batting for an injured Watkins, Senior Jasmine Green (East Orange/Jersey City, PA) reached on a single to left. Green moved to third on a single by Freyermuth, and then scored on a RBI single by Scialdone. Mont Atlo would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with two out to send the game into extra innings. In the eight, Beaver scored three runs on clutch hitting, none bigger than Ringel's two out two RBI single to give Beaver a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Freyermuth struck out the final two batters with bases loaded to preserve the the 5-3 victory. On the mound, Freyermuth pitched 8 innings, giving up no earned runs, scattering five hits, walking one, while striking out a season high 11. Offensively, Scialdone led the way with three hits, and Green followed with two, including a double in the seventh.
With the wins, Beaver now sits a top of the PSUAC standings alone at 8-0 and 15-7 overall. Beaver returns to action tomorrow, when they take on PSU Schuylkill to end their PSUAC crossover trip. First pitch is at 12 p.m.
