Akron, OH - The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team once again let a late inning lead slip through its grasp when they dropped to #7 seed Lady Eagles of Judson College (Marion, AL), 4-2.
The Lady Eagles plated the game's first run on a two-out rally in the second inning via a Penn State Beaver fielding error to make the score 1-0.
However, Beaver responded in the third inning on a Kori Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh, PA) RBI single to right field which scored first baseman Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City High School/Ellwood City, PA), who led the inning off with a single. Myranda Raymond (Brashear High School/Pittsburgh, PA) continued her RBI onslaught with a sac-fly to centerfield to give Beaver a 2-1 advantage.
Beaver continued to chip away at the Judson pitching, tallying nine hits over seven innings, but the Lady Lions couldn't add to their one-run lead. Beaver left eleven runners on base, including two in each inning except the seventh inning when they stranded one.
Once again, the sixth inning was Beaver's demise as Judson scored three runs, all unearned, and Beaver couldn't muster any offense in the seventh inning, falling to Judson.
In the loss, Scialdone went 3-4 with a run scored and Freyermuth went 2-4 with an RBI. On the mound, Freyermuth pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs on 10 hits and walked none.
Beaver will now play PSUAC rival Penn State Mont Alto (Mont Alto, PA) for fifth place in the 2011 USCAA National Softball Tournament Championship.
