Myrtle Beach, SC - The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions (0-1, 0-0 PSUAC) dropped the first game of their softball season against the Milligan College Lady Buffaloes (Johnson City, TN), 2-0, in the opening game of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Beaver kept the Lady Buffaloes at bay in the first inning as senior starting pitcher Kayla Chambers (South Side Beaver High School/Hookstown, PA) snared a comebacker to the mound and relayed it to sophomore catcher Jocelyn Wensel, (St. Mary's High School/Force, PA) to keep the game knotted at zero.
Beaver had another putout at home in the second inning. Freshman Myranda Raymond (Brashear High School/Pittsburgh, PA) chased down a Milligan hit to left centerfield, hit cut-off second baseman Lauren Pier (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) who relayed it to Wensel who applied the tag.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Milligan scored two unearned runs due to Beaver throwing errors.
Beaver couldn't muster anything offensively as Mulligan's Sidney Burns tossed a perfect game in the team's sixth win of the season (6-11 overall).
Despite the loss, Chambers (0-1) threw six impressive innings herself, allowing zero earned runs while striking out six batters and walking only two, to the NAIA Division I opponent.
Beaver will face Penn State Berks at 11:30 a.m. today.
