Hopwood, PA- The lady Lions traveled to Uniontown Thursday to play a home game against Penn State Fayette. The bats were hot, as Beaver pounded out over 30 hits in two games.
In game one, Fayette opened up the game scoring the first run, as Sophomore Casey Rubel launched the first pitch of the game over the fence to build a 1-0 lead. It was Beaver from that point on. Beaver responded with two runs in the first. Freshman Lauren Pier (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) led the game off with a walk. Senior Kayla Chambers (South Side/Hookstown,PA) followed with a double that scored Pier. Chambers then scored on a sacrafice fly later in the inning off of the bat of sophomore Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/Cranberry Twp, PA). Beaver then scored five in the 2nd, one in the third, and nine in the fourth. To end the game, Watkins hit a grand slam into the pond to invoke the mercy rule. In the 17-1 win, Chambers pitched four strong innings, giving up two hits, while striking out two.
Game two started off much like the first. Fayette struck first again, scoring one in the top of the first. Beaver responded by scoring six in the first and eight in the second to build a 14-1 lead after two. Sloppy Beaver defense led to Fayette scoring four unearned runs in the third to cut the lead to 14-5. In the bottom of the 3rd, Beaver was threatening with runners on second and third and no out, before Ruble struck again. Ruble made a spectacular diving catch in left center which led to an inning ending triple play. Beaver added six in the fourth to end the game 20-5. Sophomore Alyssa Carver (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) pitched four innings, giving up one earned run and five hits, while striking out two.
On the day, Watkins led the offensive attach, going 4 for 5, scoring six runs, hitting 3 home runs, and driving in 9. Junior Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City/Ellwood, PA) had five hits, driving in five. Freshman Myranda Raymond (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) drove in seven runs and hit a three run homer in game two.
