Lady Lions win in impressive fashion; finish trip with .500 mark

Myrtle Beach, SC – Penn State Beaver's Lady Lions won their final game of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC by trouncing Wentworth Institute of Technology Lady Cougars (Boston, MA), 17-0.
The Lady Lions pounded Wentworth pitching by scoring 17 runs on 19 hits. Nine Lady Lions had hits in the game, nine of which were the extra base variety, while eight Beaver sluggers had at least one RBI. Myranda Raymond (Brashear High School/Pittsburgh, PA), Korey Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh, PA) and Kayla Chambers (South Side High School/Hookstown, PA) each had three hits, while senior Jessica Bartges (East Allegheny High School/North Versailles, PA) chipped in with two hits of her own. Raymond also had 4 RBIs, while Freyermuth had 2 RBIs and Chambers drove in one.
Alyssa Carver (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) earned her third victory of the season by pitching her first complete game shut-out of the year. Carver threw five innings, allowed just three hits, walked one, and struck out five Wentworth batters.
Carver finished the week with a 3-0 record, pitched 16.1 innings, allowed just two earned runs, struck out 15, walked just one batter, and had a minuscule .86 ERA.
Junior Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley High School/Cranberry, PA) drilled another home run (her third of the year), went 2-2 on the day, and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Watkins batted .350 (7-20), including two doubles, three home runs, six RBIs, had 18 total bases, walked once, had an .391% on-base, stole a base, and slugged .900%.
With the win, the Lady Lions finished their southern trip with a .500 record (4-4, 0-0 PSUAC) and will host Waynesburg University (Waynesburg, PA) at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 16.
