Lady Lions Fall to Vikings, 7-2
Titusville, FL – On Thursday, March 11 the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team dropped their fourth game of their spring training trip when they fell to the Vikings of Valley City State University (Valley City, ND), 7-2.
The Lady Lions struck first as freshman Chelsea Barnes (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA) started the game off with a leadoff walk and stole second and third base. Freshman Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley High School, Harmony, PA) drove Barnes in with a 2-out single down the left field line, giving Beaver a 1-0 lead.
The lead didn't hold for long as the Vikings scored 2 unearned runs in their half of the first inning against junior starter Kayla Chambers (South Side Beaver High School, Hookstown, PA). The Vikings scored 2 more unearned runs in the second inning and added another unearned run in the fifth inning to make the lead, 5-1.
Beaver tallied their second run of the game as sophomore Katie Landis slapped a single up the middle and then stole second base. Sophomore Alysia Policaro (Beaver Falls High School, Beaver Falls, PA) drove Landis in with an RBI single to bring the score to 5-2.
Unfortunately, the Beaver comeback fell short as VCSU scored two earned runs in their half of the sixth inning and took the game.
In the loss, Chambers pitched six complete innings, gave up only two earned runs, struck out four, and walked two batters.
Lynsey Szymarek (McKeesport High School, Pittsburgh, PA) also contributed to the Beaver offense going 2-4 with a triple and single.
