Thiel Takes Two From Beaver
Greenville, PA - On Saturday, March 20 the Thiel College Tomcats (Greenville, PA) defeated the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team in a doubleheader, 6-5 and 8-2.
In the first game, Beaver struck first, capitalizing on a two-base error, followed by a one-out double by freshman Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley High School, Harmony, PA) which opened the score in the top of the fourth inning. The Lady Lions added another run in the fifth when sophomore Katie Landis (Rochester High School, Rochester, PA) led off with a single, moved to second on a ground-out by Alyssa Carver (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA), and scored on a two-out single by freshman Lynsey Szymarek (McKeeport High School, McKeesport, PA).
Thiel's Ashley McClimas led off the fifth inning with a home run, putting the Tomcats on the board and within one point of Beaver, but Thiel scored an unearned run in the sixth to tie the game.
Carver led off the seventh inning with a hit and later scored on sophomore's Lindsey Scialdone's one-out ground-out to give Beaver a 3-2 lead. Thiel scored in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score and push the game into extra innings. Both teams scored in the eighth inning before the Tomcats outscored the Lady Lions in the ninth to take the win.
In the loss, Szymarek, Landis, and senior Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School, Rochester, PA) each had two hits.
In the second game, sophomore Alysia Policaro (Beaver Falls High School, Beaver Falls, PA) and Watkins each had two hits, but the Lady Lions were never close to the Tomcats and took the loss.
At 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, the Lady Lions, now 2-7, will host the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes.
