Titusville, FL – The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions (0-3) came up on the losing end for the second time of the day, dropping a non-conference game to Kalamazoo Valley Community College (Kalamazoo, MI), 11-2.
Freshman Alyssa Carver's (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) displayed a strong performance in the first two innings, retiring the side in order, while striking out one.
The Lady Lions helped Carver in their half of the 2nd inning. Freshman Kory Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh, PA) drew a one-out walk and Senior Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School/Rochester, PA) drove her in with a one out double to right-centerfield, giving Beaver a narrow 1-0 lead.
Lady Cougars wasted no time answering Beaver's rally by scoring three runs in the 3rd inning. After Carver retired the side in order once again in the 4th inning, Kalamazoo Valley tacked on four runs in the 5th and another four runs in the 6th, making the score 11-1. In addition, Kalamazoo stymied the Beaver offense by retiring the side in order in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings.
However, the Lady Lions bats woke up in the 6th inning, as Freshman Chelsea Barnes (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) smacked a single to right field and then stole second base. Sophomore Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City High School/Ellwood City, PA) then singled Barnes home, giving Beaver its second run of the game.
The Lady Cougars managed to shut down the Beaver offense, giving them an 11-2 win.
In the loss, Scialdone went 1-3 with and RBI single while Barnes went 1-3 and scored Beaver's run.
The Lady Lions resume play this Thursday, March 11 at 9 a.m. when they face Division II opponent Valley City State University (Valley City, ND).
