Softball Team Loses First Game of Season
Titusville, FL - On Monday, March 8 the Lady Saxons of Alfred University (Alfred, NY) defeated the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team, 9-1, in Beaver's first game of the season in Florida.
Beaver was in trouble in the first two innings, but the defense held behind the pitching of junior Kayla Chambers (South Side High School, Hookstown, PA) who stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings.
Beaver jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when sophomore Alysia Policaro (Beaver Falls High School, Beaver Falls, PA) slugged a one-out triple down the right field line, and freshman Chelsea Barnes (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA) picked up her first collegiate career RBI with a sacrifice bunt, giving Beaver a 1-0 advantage.
Beaver held the lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when Alfred took a 2-1 lead with three hits and a walk during the inning. Alfred added to their lead scoring one more in the fifth and six more in the sixth inning for the win.
Beaver's Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City High School, Ellwood City, PA) led the offensive attack, going 2-3, while Policaro was 1-2 (triple) and also scored Beaver's lone run. In her first outing of the year, Chambers recorded three strikeouts, surrendered six earned runs, and walked two batters.
The Lady Lions (0-1) will take on the Lady Volunteers of John A. Logan College (Carterville, IL) at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 9.
