Lady Lions Remain Undefeated in PSUAC
Uniontown, PA - On Tuesday, April 20, the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team remained undefeated in the PSUAC when they defeated Penn State Fayette in a doubleheader, 11-7 and 11-0.
In game one, Fayette got on the board with a run, taking a 1-0 lead. Ashley Watkins, the USCAA player of the week, responded by blasting a 3-run homer in the top of the third and building a 3-1 lead for the Lady Lions.
The third inning was a big one for Fayette, too, as they scored 4 unearned runs on 3 Beaver errors for a 5-3 lead. Beaver got on the board in the fourth inning, cutting the lead by 1. In the fifth inning, Watkins struck again, belting a 2-run shot to give Beaver a 6-5 lead.
Fayette's Beth Novotny went deep in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 6-6. After both teams went scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, the game went into extra innings. In the extra frame, Beaver exploded for 5 runs and outscored Fayette in the extra frame, 5-1, to take the win.
Watkins finished the game with 3 hits, 2 home runs, and 1 double, driving in 5 runs. Freshman Chelsea Barnes (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA) and sophomore Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City High School, Ellwood City, PA) each had 2 hits. Junior Kayla Chambers (South Side High School, Hookstown, PA) pitched 8 innings, gave up 2 earned runs, had 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 12 to pick up her eighth win of the season.
In game two, it was all about Beaver. Beaver scored 4 in the first, 3 in the fourth, and 4 in the fifth. Freshman Korey Freyermuth (Perry Traditional High School, Pittsburgh, PA) pitched 5 scoreless innings, striking out 4 to earn the win. Offensively, Freyermuth belted a grand slam in the first inning to build the 4-0 lead. Senior Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School, Rochester, PA) and sophomore Jessica Campbell (Beaver Falls High School, Beaver Falls, PA) each had 2 hits.
With the wins, Beaver is 12-0 in the PSUAC and 21-14 overall. On Thursday, April 22, Beaver travels to Beaver Falls, PA to take on the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College. Beaver and Geneva split earlier in the season.
