Monaca, PA – Sunday, April 19, 2009 - The Lady Lions swept cross state rival Penn State-Scranton to keep pace with PSUAC leader PSU-Hazleton, who they split with the day before.
In game one, Junior Jen Hain (Northgate/Pittsburgh, PA) got Beaver started with a leadoff triple and Taylor Rzeczkowski (Highlands/Tarentum, PA) and Katie Landis (Rochester/Rochester, PA) had RBI's in the inning, to give Beaver a 2-0 1st inning advantage.
Although Scranton scored a run on Mary Pittack's (Landlake High School) RBI single, Beaver scored 10 runs over the next two innings to put the game out of reach by the end of the 3rd inning. Freshman Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic/Beaver, PA) blasted a solo homer in the 2nd inning, while Hain capped the scoring with a 2-run homer to left center.
Scranton did manage to score two unearned runs in the 5th inning, but Beaver secured the victory 12-3. In the win, Landis pitched a 5 inning complete game, giving up just one earned run, while striking out six and walking three batters. With the win, Landis recorded her first collegiate victory.
In the second game, Freshman Lindsay Scialdone (Lincoln High School/Ellwood, PA) gave Beaver a 2-0 advantage as she hit an RBI double to center off of Scranton's Nicole Cantarella (Mid Valley High School). Beaver scored five more runs in their half of the 3rd inning with aggressive base running and fielding errors by Scranton, to up its lead to 7-0.
However, Scranton picked its defense up as they held Beaver scoreless for the rest of the game. Fortunately for Beaver, Scranton could not muster any offensive rally against sophomore starting pitcher Kayla Chambers (South Side/Hookstown, PA). Chambers (8-9) delivered another solid performance as she allowed only five hits, struck out eight batters and walked none in the complete game win.
Beaver (7-1 PSUAC, 13-16 overall) looks to continue its winning ways in the PSUAC as they travel to PSU-New Kensington for a doubleheader, tomorrow, Monday, April 20th, 2009. The first game begins at 4 p.m.
