Geneva Defeats Beaver in Doubleheader

On Tuesday, March 24, the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team traveled to take on the Geneva College (Beaver Falls, PA) Golden Tornadoes but lost a non-conference double header, 6-2 and 8-1.
In game one, Geneva scored in the bottom of the first. Beaver remained scoreless in the second and third innings as Geneva tacked on another run in the bottom of the second and three more in the bottom of the third, givin them a 4-0 lead over the Lady Lions.
Beaver tried to rally against the Golden Tornadoes in the top of the fourth. Senior Melissa Swoager (South Side High School, South Side, PA) scored a run for Beaver on a passed ball from Geneva's catcher. Both teams were scoreless in the fifth, giving Beaver another chance to rally in the top of the sixth. The Lady Lions scored one more run when junior Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School, Rochester, PA) hit one up the middle to drive in junior Jen Hain (Northgate High School, Pittsburgh, PA).
However, Geneva was able to get one more run in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Lions had their last chance at the plate in the top of the seventh but never scored.
In game two, Geneva jumped ahead with five runs in the bottom of the first. Remaining scoreless in the first and second, the Lady Lions scored their only run in the top of the third when Hain bunted for a hit, stole her way to third base, and was hit in by Swoager's single. Beaver gave up three more runs to Geneva in the bottom of the fourth, but held them to no runs in the fifth and sixth.
On Thursday, March 26 the Lady Lions will travel to take on Waynesburg University, home of the Yellowjackets, for another non-conference double header at 4 p.m.
