Point Park Defeats Beaver in Doubleheader
On Sunday, March 22, the Lady Pioneers of Point Park University (Pittsburgh, PA) defeated the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team in a doubleheader at Beaver campus, 8-7 and 3-0.
With four consecutive losses behind them, the Lady Lions came jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning when junior Jen Hain (Northgate High School, Pittsburgh, PA) led off with a single and freshman Lindsey Scaildone (Ellwood City High School, Ellwood City, PA) HS) drove her in with an RBI single.
In the second inning, Beaver added another run when freshman Alysia Policaro (Beaver Falls High School, Beaver Falls, PA) hit a two-out single and advanced to third on a Point Park error, then scored on senior Taylor Rzeczkowski's (Highlands High School, Tarentum, PA) RBI triple.
The lead didn't last long though, when Point Park scored three runs in the top of the third inning. The Lady Pioneers scored their first run on an RBI double and a 2-run homer, giving the Lady Pioneers a 3-2 lead. Point Park added two more in the top of the fourth with a 2-run RBI double, taking the lead to 5-2.
Beaver scored two runs in their half of the sixth inning. The Lady Lions scored first on a fielder's choice and then sophomore Kayla Chambers (Southside High School, Hookstown, PA) hit an RBI double to make it a one-run game at 5-4.
However, in their last at-bats, the Lady Pioneers scored three unearned runs off relief pitcher Katie Landis (Rochester High School, Rochester, PA). The inning was capped off with Point Park's two-run homer to left centerfield to bring the Pioneers' lead to 8-4.
Beaver rallied in the seventh inning when Landis hit a monster 3-run homerun, cutting the Lady Pioneers' lead to 8-7, but couldn't add another run for the win.
In the second game, Point Park struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Pioneers added runs in the third inning with an RBI single and in the fourth inning on a solo homer to give the Lady Pioneers the victory. Beaver only managed two hits off of Point Park.
On Tuesday, March 24 the Lady Lions travel to take on the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College (Beaver Falls, PA) at 3 p.m.
