Fightin’ Beavs Prepare to Defend WPACRHL Title
After claiming the title last spring by defeating Robert Morris 3-2, the Beav’s are poised to defend their title as they head into the three game championship series.
Despite dropping their final game of the regular season to Duquesne, Penn State Beaver still qualified for the playoffs where they squared off against Carnegie Mellon in the first round. In a landslide win, the Beav’s literally skated past CMU to a 9-1 victory to advance into the semi-final game.
With the win in the quarter final round, the Beav’s drew Slippery Rock - Green in the semi’s on March 23rd. After going 1-1 with SRU - Green in the regular season, Penn State Beaver was focused taking the lead in the series and accomplished their goal. Leading to scoring efforts for the Beav’s were Brendan Rossi and captain, Dom Rossi who each scored a goal in the game. Devin Baker and Zachary Pickrell each earned an assist in the contest as well. Despite being one of their lower scoring games of the season, the two goals were enough to advance into the Championship round with a 2-1 victory.
On the season, the Beav’s have tallied a total of 83 goals and 65 assists. Leading the overall scoring efforts were Jason Schwartz who had 18 goals and 8 assists, Josh Kelly with 13 goals and 7 assists and Brendan Rossi who scored 12 goals and added 11 assists. In addition to their high powered, high scoring offense, they have also been solid on defense allowing just over 4 goals against with the combined efforts of their goalies.
The WPACRHL Championship will be comprised of a best of 3 games series where Penn State Beaver will face #1 seed Duquesne. Game 1 of the series is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6th at the RMU Island Sports Center.
