Beav's Fall in Game 1 of Championship Series
Beaver fell to Duquesne by a final score of 6-5.
In game one of the WPACHRL championship series, Beaver was hosted by Duquesne University at Robert Morris Island Sports Center.
The Fightin' Beav's, Zachary Pickrell, opened the scoring just minutes (12:39) into the game to give Beaver an early 1-0 lead. Duquesne immediately put the pressure on the defense of Beaver forcing several great saves by Grant Rumbold, who made an exceptional save at 7:30 in the first to prevent the tie. Unfortunately, about one minute later, Duquense would tie the game at 1-1 and in the closing minutes of the first period would expand their lead to 3-1 to end the first period.
To open the second period of play, the Beav's came out hot as Dom Rossi scored the first of three goals for Beaver at the 13:38 mark while they were on a power play. His efforts were followed by Jason Schwartz (10:52) and Brendan Rossi (10:06) who each scored a goal to give Beaver a 4-3 lead with a little more than half of the second period to play. Finding their rhythm and solidifying their defense, the Fightin' Beav's carried their lead through the period.
Early in the third period, after being held scoreless for nearly fifteen minutes of play, Duquesne would tie the game at 4-4 with an early goal coming at 13:24. Over the next seven minutes the teams would battle until Beaver drew a penalty resulting in a power play goal by Devin Baker to give Beaver a 5-4 advantage with six minutes remaining in the game. With time winding down, both teams battling for the win, Duquesne tied the game with 3:35 left to play and then took the lead with 2:16 to play (6-5). Despite several late surges by the Fightin' Beav's offense, they weren't able to net a goal to send the game into overtime and fell by a final score of 6-5.
Penn State Beaver will get their turn at redemption on Wednesday, April 6th at 8:30 p.m. as they head into game two of three in the WPACHRL championship series.
