Old Orchard Beach, ME - On Thursday, May 13, the University of Cincinnati, Clermont College defeated Penn State Beaver, 6-3, and will join Briarcliffe in this year's USCAA National Championship game(s).
The Cougars used a five-run second inning, fueled by a three-run homerun from Jeff Muse, to jump out to a 5-0 lead and added another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-0.
Penn State Beaver showed signs of life as Marcus Allen (Union High School, New Castle, PA) ripped a three-run homer in the top of the sixth, but Beaver couldn't manufacture any more runs as UC Clermont used a strong defensive effort to seal the win.
UC Clermont will now move on to play Briarcliffe today at 1:30 p.m. In the double-elimination style tournament, UC Clermont will have to defeat Briarcliffe twice to take home the Championship. Briarcliffe only needs to win one to secure its first USCAA National Championship since 2006.
