Beaver Splits with Fayette, Remains Second in PSUAC
Uniontown, PA - On Tuesday, April 20, the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Penn State Fayette, with Beaver winning the first game, 7-3, but losing the second, 5-3.
In game one, Fayette got on the board early, scoring 2 runs off of Beaver starter senior Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley High School, Fair Oaks, PA) in the bottom of the first inning. Beaver scored 1 run in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings to build a 4-2 lead. Beaver added 3 more in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead. Fayette battled back, scoring 1 run and loading the bases before senior Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School, Fair Oaks, PA) came in and shut the rally down, striking out the final battle to earn his third save of the season.
Scherer pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up 10 hits, walking 2, and striking out 6 to earn his first win of the season. Freshman Alex Filippi (Center High School, Aliquippa, PA) and Marcus Allen (Union High School, New Castle, PA) each had 2 hits. Freshman Cory Wagner (Center High School, Aliquippa, PA) homered in the win and drove in 2 runs.
In game two, Beaver struck first, scoring 1 in the third before Fayette struck back with 4 unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. Fayette added 1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, building a 5-1 lead before Beaver went to work in the final inning. Beaver rallied for 2 runs in the seventh, but the rally fell short and Beaver lost the game.
Senior Cody Moldovan (Ellwood City High School, Ellwood City, PA) pitched 6 innings, giving up 5 runs (1 earned), giving up 7 hits, fanning 3, and walking 1. Offensively, Allen and Fillippi each had 2 hits. Fillippi had 2 doubles, driving in a run and scoring twice.
With the split, Beaver is in second place (10-4) in the PSUAC and 14-11 overall. Beaver will close the 2010 season on the road when they travel to take on Penn State Scranton at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 24 and Penn State Hazleton at noon, Sunday, April 25.
