Beaver Lions Win Season Opener
On Sunday, March 8 the Penn State Beaver Nittay Lions baseball team opened its season with a win over the Wolverines of Northwood University (Midland, MI), 7-6, in Fort Pierce, FL.
Beaver opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Matt Lavalle (Center Area High School, Aliquippa, PA) doubled on junior Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School, Sewickley, PA) who reached on an error to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lions added two more in the forth for a 3-0 lead off of junior Justin Parasida's (Ambridge High School, Ambridge, PA) two-run triple. In the top of the sixth, the Wolverines took the lead, scoring four off of five consecutive hits. Beaver reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth off of Lavalle's three-run home run for a 6-4 lead.
In the seventh inning, Beaver added a seventh run when sophomore Huston Lorenzo (Southwest Miami High School, Miami, FL) doubled in a run. Northwood plated two in the eighth to come close, but Beaver held on for the win.
Beaver junior Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley High School, Sewickley, PA) threw nine innings, striking out four, and giving up ten hits. Lavalle led the Lions offensively with two hits (2B, HR) that drove in four runs. Lorenzo added two hits (1B, 2B) and drove in one for the Lions.
Beaver will return to action tonight when they take on the SUNY Oswego Lakers at 6 p.m. in Fort Pierce, FL.
