Beaver Defeats USCAA Opponent Columbia Union

On Sunday, April 5 the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball team hosted and defeated USCAA rival, the Columbia Union College Pioneers (Maryland) in a non-conference double header, 3-2 and 4-2.
In the first game's first inning, Beaver held Columbia Union scoreless and scored 2 runs of their own. The Pioneers rallied with two runs in the top of the second and held Beaver to no rus in that inning.
Tied at 2-2 in the third inning, the Lions were the first to break the tie when they scored in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, 3-2. The teams battled it out but remained scoreless from the fourth through seventh innings and Beaver had the win.
Junior Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School, Sewickley, PA) pitched a complete game striking out 13. Junior Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley High School, Sewickley, PA) and Frederick led with two hits each and Ryan Raraigh (Riverside High School, Fombell, PA) finished with 2 RBIs.
In game two, the Pioneers quickly scored two runs in the first inning, but Beaver responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. Tied at 2-2 again, Beaver scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead, 4-2. Beaver held the Pioneers to no runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings and won the game.
Sophomore Jake Ellis (Seneca Valley High School, Cranberry, PA) pitched a complete game allowing only five hits and two unearned runs. Beaver was led by Scherer with three hits and two runs scored. Raraigh finished the game with two RBIs.
Due to weather conditions on April 6, Beaver's game against the Gannon University Golden Knights has been postponed. The Lions are up next when they host the Penn College Wildcats, Thursday, April 9, at 2 p.m.
