Baseball Team Pushes Winning Streak to Five
The Penn State Beaver Baseball team pushed their winning streak to five games when they won games four and five against Penn State York.
In game one, Beaver scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to win 3-2. Sophomore Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School) won his second game of the year, pitching six innings, giving up four hits, and giving up 2 earned runs while fanning fifteen. Freshman Ried Schwertz (Freedom High School) and sophomore Jim Leo (Monaca High School) led the way with run-scoring triples. Leo and senior Pat Ringel (Sto-Rox High School) each had a pair of hits in the win.
In game two, Beaver took the lead early, scoring 3 in the bottom of the first. York scored 1 in the third, 3 in the fifth, and 2 in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead into the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Beaver went to work, scoring three in their final time at bat to win their fifth straight. Freshman Jake Ellis recorded his first career victory, pitching one inning, giving up no hits, runs, or walks. Senior Jeff Trojan (Rochester High School) led the way offensively, recording three hits, one double, and knocking in the winning run in the seventh inning.
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18 when they travel to a match-up against their former WPCC rival, Westmoreland County Community College at 4 p.m. Beaver returns to PSUAC action on Sunday when they host Penn State Delaware at noon (DH).
