Lady Lions advance to PSUAC Championship
The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions defeated Penn State Schuylkill 3-0 to advance to the PSUAC Championship.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions made quick work of the PSUAC-East No.1 seeded Penn State Schuylkill on Monday's PSUAC Semifinal match at Rec Hall. Beaver defeated Schuylkill by the score of 3-0.
In the first set, Schuylkill built an early 6-2 lead, but Beaver stormed back by taking an early lead (8-7) off a service ace by sophomore senior Alexis Albrecht (Oakdale/Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter). As the set continued, Beaver never looked back and sealed the deal in with a late 17-5 run to pull away with a 25-12 set-one victory.
Set two started with the teams matching each other point-for-point until the 8-8 mark. Then, freshman Mine' Okoloko (Boca Raton/NMH) came up with a big block to give Beaver a 9-8 lead. In the remaining minutes of the second, Beaver forged on a 16-3 run and tallied on a 25-16 set-win and go up 2-0 over Schuylkill heading into the third.
Beaver controlled the tempo of set three from the jump, as senior Amanda Mike (Hopewell) and sophomore Emily Keener (Utica) put down three kills apiece to build an early 10-2 lead. Once again, Beaver never looked back, winning set three 25-7 and the match with a 3-0 sweep.
For the match, Beaver had 38 kills to Schuylkill's 13. Mike and Keener led with 8 kills each. On defense, sophomore Heaven Bowman (Houston/Dulles) led the team in digs with 11. Sophomore Kelsie Hallum (Hopewell) also contributed double-digit assists with 26 in the win.
Beaver now stands at 19-9 on the year and will advance to tomorrow night's PSUAC Championship. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Rec Hall in State College, Pa. They will take on the winner of the Penn State Fayette and Penn State Brandywine.
