By Noelle Miloszewski
Monaca, PA - On Saturday, Sept. 26 the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions volleyball team hosted a doubleheader in which they defeated Penn State York, 3-0, but lost to Penn State Mont Alto, 3-1.
Beaver's first set against York was close, but Beaver pulled off a 25-17 victory. The Lions went on a 5-0 run and dominated the second set, 25-13. In the final set, York held a six-point advantage over Beaver, but Heather Sandusky's (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA) first kill of the set energized her teammates and sparked a comeback to win the set, 25-19.
Sandusky led Beaver with 16 kills, senior Jen Hain (Northgate High School, Pittsburgh, PA) contributed 28 assists, and freshman Shannon Faix (Brentwood High School, Pittsburgh, PA) added 16 digs.
In the night's second game, Beaver fell to Mont Alto in a four-set match. The first set was extremely close, with both teams playing well, but Mont Alto pushed ahead for the win, 25-21.
In the second set, the competition was even closer. After playing point-for-point, Beaver took advantage of several Mont Alto errors and created a five point lead. However, the score quickly tied, but Hain served two aces in a row to take the set, 25-23.
Beaver lost the third and fourth sets, 25-15 and 25-20. In both games, Beaver came out slow and, despite strong efforts, allowed Mont Alto to build a significant advantage.
Sandusky, Hain, and freshman Daina Owens (Farrell High School, New Castle, PA) each had 7 kills. Junior Liz Hain (Northgate High School, Pittsburgh, PA) and Faix each added 16 digs in the effort.
Beaver is 8-2 in the PSUAC and 8-8 overall. The Beaver Lady Lions continue conference play when they travel to Penn State Fayette for a 7 p.m. match on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
