Lady Lions Defeat WCCC Wolfpack
By Noelle Miloszewski
Monaca, PA - Coming off a two game losing streak, Beaver halted the slide by defeating the Westmoreland Community College Wolfpack (3-1) in a non-conference home game.
The first set was very fast-paced. The two teams rallied back and forth before the Wolfpack took a five point lead (15-20). Beaver fought back, but lost the set 17-25. The second set was the reverse of the first. The game was close. However, Beaver took the 20-15 lead, and the set (25-16).
In the third set, Beaver quickly dug itself into a 2-9 deficit. With several smart plays and a lot of hustle, the Lions brought itself within three points (8-11) and the set remained close from then on. Down by two (16-18) Beaver fired up its jets. First, the duo of Junior Liz Hain (Northgate/Pittsburgh, PA) and Freshman Jordan Headley (Waynesburg/Waynesburg, PA) blocked a Wolfpack attempt for a point. Directly after, Junior Heather Sandusky (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) and Freshman Daina Owens (Farrell/New Castle, PA) each added a kill a piece. The Wolfpack clawed back and kept close. Tied at 24's, the set would not end until the Lions finally pulled away and took the win, 30-28.
In the fourth set, the Lions came out focused and grabbed a lead quickly. With the score at 11-8, Hain dropped an ace, followed by back-to-back kills from Owens. Offensively and defensively, the Lions dominated and created a 20-14 lead. Westmoreland did make a comeback, but it was not enough to stop Beaver from winning the set (25-23) and the game (3-1).
Sandusky led the Lions with 29 kills. Senior Jen Hain (Northgate/Pittsburgh, PA) earned 46 assists, and Freshman Shannon Faix (Brentwood/Pittsburgh, PA) contributed 17 digs and 3 aces.
With the win, Beaver is now at an even 9-9 overall and remains 8-3 in its conference. Tomorrow, the Lions take on Penn State Schuylkill in a 2pm home game.
