Altoona, PA - The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team was shocked for the second consecutive time in as many games when the Penn College Lady Wildcats eliminated Beaver from the PSUAC Championship with a score of 6-1.
Penn College struck in the first inning as Erin Bannon (Williamsport High School/Williamsport, PA) hit a seeing-eye-single to right field past the dive of second baseman Lauren Pier (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) to give the Lady Wildcats a quick 1-0 lead.
Beaver responded in their half of the first inning as freshman Myranda Raymond (Brashear High School/Pittsburgh, PA) hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
In the third inning, Penn College plated its second run of the game on a Chelsea Hewitt (Shippensburg Area High School/Shippensburg, PA) RBI single to right field to give the Lady Wildcats a 2-1 advantage.
In the fifth inning, Penn College took control as they scraped their way to four runs to extend their lead to 6-1. With the bases loaded and no outs, pitcher Lacy Lose (Jersey Shore Area High School/Avis, PA) hit an RBI single to left for the first run of the inning. Sophomore Amber Eck (Jersey Shore Area High School/Williamsport, PA) hit a sac fly to right for the second run, and Desiree Buffington (Upper Dauphin Area High School/Pillow, PA) added another RBI on a ball to short. Beaver allowed another run on two costly throwing errors to cap the Wildcat outburst.
Beaver couldn't gather any offense in the final two frames and fell to Penn College, 6-1.
In the win, Lose went seven strong innings, scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked only two Beaver batters. Senior Kayla Chambers (South Side Beaver High School/Hookstown, PA), recovering from a severe ankle injury, suffered the loss.
Offensively, Beaver was headed by Alyssa Carver (New Brighton High School/New Brighton, PA) and Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic High School/Beaver, PA) who each had two hits in the game.
In the two tournament games, Beaver had only two runs which was their lowest back-to-back run output of the season.
Despite being eliminated from the PSUAC Championship Tournament, Beaver's season will continue. They received an at-large berth in the USCAA National Tournament, May 6-8, in Akron, OH.
