Monaca, PA - After a dominating first quarter, the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions blow past the women of Penn State Mont Alto to advance to the semi-finals in the PSUAC playoffs. After a 31-1 first quarter score, the Penn State Beaver team never took their foot off the gas and cruised to an easy win with a final score of 101-43. Led by Junior guard Diamond Thomas (Pittsburgh, PA/Carylnton) and her 21 points and 8 steals, Beaver's win was never in doubt as they looked unbeatable in tonight's performance.
To start the game, Beaver went on a quick 18-0 run, with Sophmore guard Emily Keener (Utica, OH/Utica) leading the charge by scoring 10 of those 18 points. With dominating performances by the entire Beaver team there wasn't much offense to speak of from Mont Alto for the first 10 minutes, as Beaver finally conceded their first point of the game at the 3 minute mark as Mont Alto made a lone free throw. However that was all that Mont Alto would get in their first 10 minutes, as Beaver would keep pushing to end the first quarter with a commanding 31-1 lead. In the second quarter Beaver would keep the same intensity, not coasting on their large lead and instead keeping the pressure on and scoring 19 more point before the half, going into the intermission up 50-14.
Already up 36 points, Beaver came into the second half of this game ready to make a statement, as the entire Beaver team would get a chance to make an impact in this game. Holding Mont Alto to just 14 points in the third quarter, the Lady Lions would add on to their impressive lead by adding 28 points of their own, making it a 78-28 game going into the fourth. With a 50 point lead in the fourth quarter the entire Beaver team had not yet run out of energy as they continued their statement performance in their PSUAC opener by scoring 23 more points and finishing with a commanding 101-43 win over the women of Mont Alto.
In a performance like this, Sophmore guard Emily Keener, with 20 points, Junior guard Diamond Thomas, with 21 points and 8 steals, and Sophmore guard Alexis Cross (Columbiana, OH/Columbiana), with 19 points and 4 rebounds, were the shining stars of the night. Together these ladies combined for 60 of the team's 101 points in their quarterfinal victory. Beaver now looks to keep this momentum going into their semi-final matchup on Friday, February 28, at home. Game time is at 7 pm, with the opponent yet to be determined.
