Seven game Win Streak Snapped by Bethany
Bethany, WV. – The Penn State Beaver women's basketball team traveled to Bethany, WV to take on Bethany College in their final game before the holiday break.
Scoring efforts were led by sophomore guard, Diamond Thomas (Pittsburgh/Carlynton) and junior forward, Cheynenne Lopez (Roswell, NM Goddard) who each tallied 11 points in this afternoons game. They were followed by freshman, Jimya Chambers (Phoenix, AZ Westview) with 10 points and a team-leading 6 rebounds.
1st Quarter: After a slow start, falling behind by six early (0-6), Beaver finally got on the board with a lay-up from Lopez (assisted by D. Thomas). After a quick bucket from the Bison, Beaver narrowed their deficit on a 3-pointer from Chambers (assisted by Alexis Cross) to come within three. The defense of the Lady Lions continued to struggle as they fell behind 12-5, but Lopez then netted a 3-pointer of her own to bring the game within four. For nearly 3 minutes the teams were at a stalemate, but in the final minute and a half of the quarter, Bethany expanded their lead to 17-8.
2nd Quarter: Bethany expanded their lead to 27-8 to open the quarter, scoring 10 unanswered points before Mikayla Womer (Jackson Center, PA / Lakeview) made a lay-up to put the Lady Lions into double digits. Beaver kept battling and at the end of the quarter narrowed the score to 41-25 as five different players scored in the period to cut the Bison lead to 16 going into the half.
3rd Quarter: Beaver looked to swing the momentum in the second half as they opened with a 5 point run from Chambers to bring the game within 11 (41-30). At the 7:18 mark, Emily Keener (Utica, OH / Utica) hit a 3-pointer which was quickly answered by a Bethany 3-pointer. As the teams continued to battle, Beaver struggled to cut the Bison lead, cutting the lead to as few as ten but eventually finding themselves down 27 at the end of the quarter (68-41)
4th Quarter: In the final period of the game, the Beaver offense came alive, outscoring Bethany 20-7 as seven different players scored in the fourth. However, despite the late surge, Beaver would fall by a final score of 75-61.
Box Score Highlights: Beaver shot just under 50% from the field, slightly higher than Bethany who shot 46.8%. Beaver was outrebounded 38 to 26 and was outscored off of turnovers 21-10.
The Lady Lions drop to 10-2 overall and remain in first place in the PSUAC (4-0) as they head into the holiday break.
Beaver will return to action on Monday, January 7th as they host crosstown rival, Penn State Greater Allegheny for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
