Shenango snags Pink Out win vs. rival Penn State Beaver

SHARON, Pa - The First Set foreshadowed what was to be a great match between the two campuses that lie only 47 miles from one another. Beaver got off to an early 9-5 lead over Shenango behind the strong serving of the visiting Monaca squad. The Shenango Lady Lions roared back behind the powerful serving of Liv Vogel who tied the set at 11, and eventually taking a 19-16 lead.  The two teams would find themselves tied at 21 again, before Shenango emerged victorious behind the Vogel, Emily Bortnick, and Katie Richards, all of whom registered multiple kills in this set to lead the team to a 25-21 set victory.

The Second Set saw Penn State Beaver take a 7-6 lead after an exciting exchange in the contest from the onset. The Beaver squad then extended their lead to 16-10 and 22 -18. It looked as if the visiting team was about to take the set, but Shenango would not relent. Behind the serve of Jill Dunlevy and Bortnick and the defense of Donique Marcella (who led the team with 9 digs in the set.) The Shenango Squad mounted a furious come back to take the set 25-23.

The Third Set once again saw the two teams tied early at 8. Penn State Beaver then took a commanding 16-10 lead. Emily Filicky and Bortnick helped to mount a small come back, as they each posted serving aces, but the effort fell short as Beaver took the set 25-17.

The Fourth Set mirrored the prior bouts as the two teams found themselves knotted at 4 apiece. Beaver once again took a strong lead late into the set 20-18. Jillian Dunleavy once again rose to the occasion and produced 2 of her team high 4 kills. Dunleavy along with Vogel who posted an ace guided Shenango to a 25-21 set win and a 3-1 Match win.

Freshman Jillian Dunleavy was recognized as The Pink Out Player of the game, sponsored by Blaylock Sewar and Drain. Dunleavy posted a .214% Hitting percentage, 4 kills, and she also added 2 blocks in the contest.

Penn State Shenango raised $833 of its $1000 goal for The Sideout Foundation! We want to personally thank the Penn State Beaver team Head Coach Sean Cleary, who felt a personal connection to the cause, who bought 25 shirts at the door. We have ordered additional T-Shirts and those will be available soon for purchase in Sharon Hall 210A.

Shenango's next game will see them travel south to battle Penn State Greater Allegheny on Thursday October 21 at 7:00 pm.
