BB sweeps Beaver

The Penn State Fayette baseball team picked up their first road wins of the season with a Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) sweep at Penn State Beaver Saturday.

"These were two big wins for us," he said. "Our pitching was excellent and (Chris) Redulic set the tone in the first game.  (Kole) Koontz held them after the first inning of game two.  Cade Warrick had a great day at the plate for us, and Josh Burns had huge hits in both games that put us ahead.  Their pitchers kept us off-balance but when we needed it most, the guys came through.  We have to build momentum from today and carry it into our next set of games."

Fayette won the first game 8-2 and completed the sweep with a 5-3 victory in the second.

In the opener, Rendulic (Port Vue, PA/South Allegheny HS) limited Beaver to a pair of earned runs and eight hits in his seven-inning complete game performance.  He finished with five strikeouts.

Warrick (Mill Run, PA/Connellsville HS), Kade Musgrove (Dunbar, PA/Connellsville HS) and Andrew Despot (Moon, PA/Moon Area HS) each recorded two hits.  Warrick (Mill Run, PA/Connellsville HS) had a triple and a single and also drove in three while Burns (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands HS) had a double and single.

Fayette took a 1-0 lead in the first when Despot singled in Musgrove.

After Beaver tied the game in the third, Fayette scored three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

In the sixth, Burns doubled in Despot and Warrick, and Burns scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Morgan (Eighty-Four, PA/Ringgold HS).

Fayette put the game away in the seventh when Scott drove in Kyle Ridley (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville HS) with an RBI single and Warrick hit a three-run triple.

In the nightcap, Koontz (Dawson, PA/Connellsville HS) struck out three and gave up three earned runs and five hits over five innings.  Scott shut down Beaver over the last two innings, giving up one hit, to preserve the win and earn the save.

The teams both exploded offensively in the first and neither team scored again the rest of the game.

Burns doubled in two runs and then Fayette added an unearned run.  Despot stole home to make the score 4-0 and Morgan scored an unearned run to give Fayette the five-run heading into the bottom of the inning.

Beaver scored their three runs in the home-half of the first, but Koontz and Scott held it together on the mound the rest of the way to give Fayette the sweep.

With the wins, Fayette (5-12 overall, 2-3 PSUAC) leapfrogged Beaver (2-7, 1-4) and is in fourth place in the PSUAC West division, one game behind Penn State Mont Alto (11-7, 3-2) for third.  Fayette is off until Saturday when it hosts Penn State Greater Allegheny (8-10, 4-1) before finishing the three-game series at GA Sunday.  Fayette and Beaver will also try to reschedule Friday's rain out at some point.
