Beaver ends the day 1-2 in quad match

Monaca, Pa. -- The Penn State Beaver women's volleyball team faced off against three teams on Saturday. Beaver competed against Community College of Beaver County in the first game of the day. These teams have played it each other twice earlier in the regular season, which Beaver both won. Beaver sits at a 13-8 overall record for the regular season and looks to extend the team's current two-game winning streak in today's matches.
In the first set against CCBC, the ladies looked fierce on both sides on the floor and took an early lead. However, CCBC got hot on offense and took the lead midway through the set (17-20). Beaver started to catch up and then tied the game at 23-23 before CCBC took a time-out. In the final minutes of the set, Beaver hung on and pulled away with the win. Beaver outscored CCBC 12 to 8 on kills and took the first set 25-23. In the second set, Beaver went on an early run and CCBC called a time-out (10-5). In the next few minutes, Emily Dellinger scored a kill and increased the lead to 13-5. As the set went on, CCBC kept the game within five points late in the set (23-18) but couldn't recover. Beaver won the second set 25-19. The third set went back and forth in the first few minutes until Beaver went on a three-point run at 7-4. Beaver's offense maintained pressure on CCBC and earned a seven-point lead at 13-6 before CCBC called a time-out. Ramiya White scored a late-set kill that put Beaver ahead eight points late in the set (22-14). Then, CCBC shutdown and Beaver took the set 25-14, securing the team's first win of the day. Leading the offense against CCBC were Brooke Tomasko with 10 kills and Maria Slater with 5 service aces. Emily Keener tallied a commendable 18 assists for the game.
Beaver then faced Potomac State College in the team's second match of the day.
As the first set began, Potomac came out of the gates aggressive and went on an early 5-0 against the Lady Lions. Then, Slater tipped the ball over the net and put Beaver on the board (1-5). Potomac kept up its offensive assault and went up 10 points before Beaver called a time-out at 2-12. The lady lions couldn't recover from the early deficit and were outscored 10 to 1 on kills, losing the set 9-25. In the second set, Beaver once again fell behind early at 5-12. Then Stephanie Stadjuhar scored back to back points and put Beaver in striking distance at 8-12. However, Potomac went on a run and Beaver was down 9-15 halfway through the set. In the next few minutes, Alexis Albrecht scored two straight service aces and cut the deficit to three points. The set stayed within three points in the final minutes of the set, but Potomac got a big block that got the team at game point (20-24). Beaver then battled back and scored the next two points. However, Beaver hit the net on the next rally and lost the set 22-25. The third set was much closer for Beaver with the teams tied at 9-9. Then, Beaver allowed a five-point run by Potomac at 10-14. Beaver fought back and with a big kill from Amanda Mike followed by a huge block from Maria Slater, Beaver tied the game at 16-16. Then, Potomac began making errors and Beaver now had the lead at 22-20 before Potomac took a time-out. In the final minutes of the set, Cheyenne Sherman scored a late kill and put Beaver at game point (24-21). The ladies held on and won the set on the next rally 25-21. In the fourth set, the game went back and forth and both for the entire set. With the set tied at 22-22, Potomac pulled away and won the set 25-22, handing the Lady Lion's their first loss of the day (1-3).
In the final match against Columbus State Community College, the ladies struggled and looked tired in the first two sets. Beaver lost the first set 25-18 and lost 25-14 in the second set. In the third set, however, CSCC allowed Beaver to go on an early six-point run at 8-2 before the visitors took a time-out. Then, CSCC fought back and tied the game at 16-16. The Beaver ladies then began making errors and found themselves down five points before taking a time-out. But the ladies dug deep and pulled the win out at the end (26-24). Down two sets, Beaver fought and kept the fourth set close until the very end, but CSCC went on to win 25-22. Beaver lost the match 1-3.
With today's results, Beaver now sits at a 14-10 overall record for the regular season, but the team has two games left before the regular season ends. Beaver's next game is against Penn State New Kensington at home on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in the first of the final two conference matches of the regular season. The match starts at 7 p.m.
