Mont Alto, Pa. -- The Lady Lions lost a close game against Mont Alto, 2-3.
In Sunday afternoon's match-up, the Penn State Beaver women's volleyball team headed to Penn State Mont Alto. After losing a tough match against Penn State DuBois this past Thursday, the ladies set out to end the week with a victory before playing at home the following night.
The ladies played an impressive first set. Beaver's offense played sharp and outscored Mont Alto 25-19 with 9 kills. The team also ended the set with 39 takeaways.
In the second set, however, the teams were neck-to-neck for the entire set. Beaver was outscored on kills 8-9 by Mont Alto and lost the set 22-25.
With both teams now tied, the Lady Lions looked determined to take back the lead in the third set. Beaver went blow for blow with Mont Alto's offense, and the set was in striking distance for both teams. Mont Alto, however, prevailed and won the set, defeating the Lady Lions in another close set by 22-25.
Heading into the fourth set, Beaver refused to go down after starting the game off with a dominant performance in the first set. The Lady Lions attacked and outscored Mont Alto on kills, 10-5. The ladies redeemed themselves with a performance that mimicked set one and went on to win the set 25-20 and force a fifth set.
Beaver had turned the tides on Mont Alto, and tensions were high on the court as the fifth set began. Although Beaver played tough, Mont Alto forced the team to make server errors, and defeat the Lady Lions 15-10 in the final set. Beaver lost the match 2-3.
While the match bolstered an unfavorable outcome for the ladies, they showed a valiant effort by tying the match after a two-set deficit. Stephanie Stadjuhar was a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball, earning 15 kills and 17 digs. Also leading the offense, Maria Slater had 9 kills, and both Ramiya White and Brooke Tomasko each scored 8 kills. Heaven Bowman also did a great job contributing to the defense with 15 digs.
Today's loss places the women's volleyball team 3-5 overall for the season and 0-2 in the PSUAC. The ladies will head into battle again at home on Monday, September 17, where they will face-off against Butler County Community College. The game is set for 6:00 p.m.
