Penn State Beaver's Lady Lions started the new year on the road as they traveled to Westminster College. The close game ended with Beaver falling 59-58.
As the game went underway, Westminster made an early free throw, maintaining their home field advantage against Beaver. Senior Brittany Jackson made an early layup that only briefly put Beaver ahead. Hoping to narrow their opponent's quickly growing lead, freshman Julia Sabbio made a 3-point jump shot. Westminster, however, continued to grow their lead, leaving Beaver trailing 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.
As the second period went underway, Beaver continued to struggle as Westminster maintained control of the ball. At one point, the team was down 12 points, but they soon began to fight back. Freshman Diamond Thomas helped the team to narrow their opponent's lead. Free throws from Jackson and sophomore Rachael Cummings helped to end the half at 31-26, with Beaver trailing by 5 points.
The third period showed Beaver hoping to gain a lead, as they struck back with successful rebounds and layups. Jackson helped to tie the game at 33 thanks to her layup and free throw, following a Westminster foul. But they soon were trailing as their opponent grew a lead, ending the period at 44-49.
The final period put the Lady Lions within close victory. Jackson helped to put the team one point away from another tie, and soon after pushed Beaver ahead of Westminster by 3 points. Westminster came back within the final minute, however, despite another tie from Beaver. Ultimately, a free throw helped Westminster to defeat Beaver 59-58.
The Lady Lions are now 5-8 in their overall season. They will return home on Tuesday, Jan. 16, taking on Apprentice in the team's first home game of 2018.
