Beaver Takes on D1 Youngstown State
Youngstown, OH -- Beaver Takes on D1 Youngstown State
By: Chris Rotondo
Beaver traveled to D1 Youngstown State University Saturday morning for a non-conference match-up. Despite the 97-40 loss, Beaver's Brittany Jackson had a double-double, scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds. This was right on par with her performance against PSUAC opponents.
As the game began, it was clear that Beaver's odds were against them, as Youngstown State scored the first 11 points of the game, despite attempts from Jackson and sophomore Rachael Cummings. Four minute into the game, freshman Diamond Thomas made a jump shot that put Beaver on the board. Beaver would not make another basket until later in the quarter, as they struggled significantly to gain control of the ball.
As the second quarter began, Beaver was down 23-6. The team continued to be shut out by their opponent throughout the quarter. Halfway through the quarter, Jackson made one of two free throw attempts. Soon after, senior Roxy Kie successfully made a 3-point jump shot, followed by another from Jackson. The team began to grow hope after these successful plays, though their opponent continued to build their advantage. Jackson continued to be mostly successful on her layup attempts, bringing the score to 55-19 at the half.
The third quarter showed Beaver continuing to struggle. The team only made 10 points in the quarter, led by Jackson's jump shots. As the final quarter started, the team was down 79-29. It was clear that they would not be victorious in this match, but Beaver still worked to keep up their pace. Jackson continued to lead the team, thanks in part to a successful 3-pointer. Her baskets during the game resulted in Jackson making a double-double against the Division 1 Youngstown State. While the game ended with a 97-40 loss to Youngstown State, Beaver still had some success of their own in the game.
The team is currently 5-7 in their overall season. They will return in the new year as they travel to Westminster College on Jan. 8.
