Penn State Beaver's Lady Lions faced off against Geneva Saturday as a part of this weekend's Beaver Holiday Tournament. Beaver won the close game with a score of 56-52.
The first quarter started in Geneva's favor as the team made an early layup. Beaver was quick to tie up the game thanks to senior Brittany Jackson. As the game was tied at 6, both teams fought aggressively to pull ahead. Freshman Diamond Thomas helped to push the team ahead of their opponent with a couple of layups, as well as a free throw. A late jump shot by Jackson put Beaver ahead at the end of the first quarter 17-12.
In the second quarter, Geneva was able to make rebounds that ultimately helped them push ahead of Beaver. The close competition in this quarter matched the rest of the game, as both teams fought to stay ahead. Thomas tied both the game up with 2 minutes left in the quarter, but Geneva quickly gained an extra 2 points. In the last minute, Jackson and freshman Jakhira Legoskey made layups that suddenly pushed Beaver ahead 25-23 at the half.
The third quarter started with a bang as senior Roxy Kie made a 3-point jump shot that put the team ahead by 5 points. Another layup by Kie helped to push Beaver ahead even more. Geneva made a decent comeback in the quarter as they tried to narrow the lead, but Beaver always pushed ahead in their defense. Geneva came close to tieing the game, but free throws by Jackson and Thomas gave Beaver a 3 point lead at the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter continued in Beaver's favor as Kie once again made an early 3-pointer. Jackson also made a 3-pointer that pushed Beaver ahead by 8 points. As the game drew to a close, Geneva suddenly grew a burst of steam as they slowly came close to tieing the game. In the final minute of the game, Beaver was ahead 52-50. Knowing that they could not blow their lead at the last minute, the team called a last minute timeout. When they returned, Jackson made a layup that pushed the team ahead, but Geneva soon made 2 free throws that left them trailing by 2. In the final seconds of the game, freshman Libby Thomas was successful in making 2 free throws, giving Beaver a 56-52 victory.
Beaver is now 5-6 in their overall record this season. The team will play their final game of 2017 Wednesday as they travel to Youngstown State University.
