The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions lose in their home opener to Point Park by a final score of 85-44.
The Penn State Beaver women's basketball team opened up their season at home with a tough matchup agianst Point Park. The Lady Lions are coming into this game looking to continue their success of last season in which they won the PSUAC championship. With a much younger team than last season, Beaver comes into this game looking to show off what they can do against a powerhouse program in Point Park.
The game started off looking to be a fast paced matchup. Both teams seemed more than ready to prove what they could do and that ended up in some sloppy play for both teams in the first quarter of play, which was ruled by turnovers. As the second quarter started both teams seemed to settle down. Point Park really started to pull together in the second quarter as they began to pull ahead and take control of the momentum of the game, as they outscored Beaver 30-10 to take a 46-21 lead into the half. The second half didn't go much better for Beaver as they battled hard but just didn't get the momentum they need to come back against a really good Point Park team. Beaver struggled to keep up with Point Park in this one as they were out shot and out rebounded in this one. When it was all said and done Beaver ended up losing by a disappointing score of 85-44.
Beaver lost this game in disappointing fashion as the Lady Lions just seemed out matched against a very good Point Park team. The team played very hard, but possesion problems and the inability to finish really hurt Beaver in the end. The Lady Lions were lead in this game by Sophomore Mia Mattes, who scored a team high 12 points in the losing effort, as well as Senior Cassandra Flowers, who gathered 8 rebounds. The team will be back in action on Saturday, November 19, as they take on Apprentice at home. Game time is set for 7 pm, and every fan in attendance will recieve a free Penn State Beaver cup.
