DuBois, Pa -- The Penn State Beaver softball team took the field for the first game of the 2018 USCAA National Tournament on Monday afternoon looking to face off against the Mississippi University for Women. After ending their PSUAC tournament run short of the championship game, Beaver heads into this game looking to get back on track with a win to start their tournament run hot.
Beaver struggled from the begining in this game, as their offense just wasn't firing on all cylinders against Mississippi University for Women. In the bottom of the second, Mississippi scored the game's first run off an error by Beaver, jumping out to an early lead that they would continue to build upon throughout the game. It was in the top of the fifth inning when Mississippi rallied to put up 4 runs, putting the game out of reach for Beaver as their struggles offesnively kept them hitless through the first 6 innings. Finally in the bottom of the seventh inning, Beaver Junior, Brittany Zahn (New Brighton, PA / New Brighton) recorded the team's only hit, which wasn't enough as the team ended up falling by a final score of 7-0.
With their loss today, Beaver is now 0-1 in the 2018 USCAA National Tournament, and will play again tomorrow against the loser of the game between Penn State Brandywine and NHTI. Game time tomorrow is scheduled for 10 a.m.
