Beaver drops game two to Hazleton, 8-6.
Drifton, PA -- Beaver falls to Hazleton, 8-6, in a PSUAC Tournament showdown.
After Hazleton opened the game, taking a two run lead in the first inning, Beaver sought their revenge in the second inning. With one out, Asia Borders (Ellwood City, PA / Ellwood) walked and on an Emily Dietrich (Sewickley, PA / Quaker Valley) single, was able to advance to third. With runners on the corners, Dina Cable (Mannington, NJ / Salem County Vo Tech) sacrificed to score Borders. Now with two outs, and runners on second and third after a Rachael Charlier (Burgettstown, PA / Burgettstown) walk, Vanessa Jackson (Snohomish, WA / Snohomish) hit a 2-RBI double to right field, scoring both Detrich and Charlier to give Beaver a 3-2 lead. Hazleton would quickly tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning.
As the game moved into the third inning, tied 3-3, Beaver generated two more runs on an RBI single from Charlier, scoring two to regain the lead, 5-3. In the bottom of the inning, Hazleton, just as they have all game, answered with a run of the their own narrowing the score to 5-4.
After a defensive stalemate in the fourth inning, both teams added a run in the fifth inning advancing the score to 6-5 as the game headed into the final two innings. Beaver was held hitless in the top of the inning, but did not have the same fortune on their defensive stand as they gave up 3 runs, including a 2-run home run. In their final at bat, things looked promising as Borders was walked to open the inning. However, on a line drive to center field from Dietrich, Borders was picked off at first on the catch resulting in the double play. Despite the efforts of Cable, who singled, Beaver couldn't rally for the win as the last batter grounded into the final out of the game with Beaver falling 8-6.
Beaver was lead by Rachael Charlier and Vanessa Jackson who each went 2 for 3 with two and three RBI's respectively. On the mound was Sarah Foose and Jackson, splitting the game, each pitching three innings.
Beaver will continue their quest to win the tournament tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. when they face Penn State Mont Alto in a loser's bracket game at the Drifton Softball Complex.
