Beaver Splits With Carlow

Monaca, PA - On Wednesday, March 31, the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team split a doubleheader with the Celtics of Carlow University (Pittsburgh, PA), losing the first game 5-2 and winning the second 11-7.
The first game was tied 2-2 at the bottom of the fifth after senior Alonna Verrico's (Rochester High School, Rochester, PA) RBI. However, Carlow hit a home run in the sixth inning, bringing in three runs to win the game.
For the game, Verrico had 2 RBIs. Freshman Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley High School, Cranberry Township, PA) batted 2-4, and freshman Chelsea Barnes (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA) went 2-2 at bat.
In the second game, Beaver held a 7-0 advantage at the top of the fifth inning. Carlow came back, scoring a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings. With the game tied 7-7 at the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Lions cranked out four more runs to defeat the Celtics.
The Lady Lions batted exceptionally well in the win. Freshman Kori Freyermuth (Perry Traditional Academy, Pittsburgh, PA) hit two home runs. Watkins was a perfect 3-3 at bat and had 3 RBIs, and freshman Lynsey Szymarek (McKeesport High School, Pittsburgh, PA) batted 3-4. Verrico went 2-3 at bat.
Freshman Alyssa Carver (New Brighton High School, New Brighton, PA) was the winning pitcher in the game.
The Lady Lions are 5-12 overall. On Thursday, April 1, Beaver will travel to take on the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets (Waynesburg, PA) at 1:00 p.m.
